Are You Wasting the Ingredients for the Greatest Superfood Around?

When you hear the word “superfood,” you may think of some sort of exotic tropical fruit that only grows in Brazil, or maybe one of those hyped-up multi-level-marketing “super juices” that you’ve seen advertised online.

Would you be surprised to learn that one of the best superfoods you can find is something you can easily make yourself at home, and you probably throw the main ingredient in the trash just about every day?

The superfood we’re talking about here is none other than bone broth – super easy, super cheap, and its health benefits are great and plentiful.

This article explains just a few of them:

First, Gwyneth Paltrow made gluten-free eating seem sexy. Then, it was conscious uncoupling. And now, Gwyneth is part of the momentum behind another trend: drinking bone broth—a simple stock made from the bones of animals—for health benefits. The actress included bone broth as an ingredient in Goop’s Winter Detox Mag, but it’s not the only place the food is popping up: A bone-broth subscription service called Bone Deep and Harmony opened in August, and there’s even a food stall in New York called Brodo that sells primarily broth. Proponents of the food say it’s full of healthy vitamins and minerals and that it even helps get rid of wrinkles and ease GI problems.

How is the broth made? The process is really simple: You put the bones in boiling water, add some veggies if you want (parsnips, parsley, celery, and carrots, etc.), then let it bubble away. The longer it cooks, the darker and more flavorful the broth gets.

You can just drink the resulting liquid, but you can also use it for more creative purposes, like sautéing vegetables.

If you’re not into the idea of making your own but want to try bone broth out anyway, there are tons of pre-prepared versions you can pick up on your next grocery trip. Just be aware of added salt and other artificial ingredients.
