Reduce waste, save money, and avoid harmful chemicals with this natural homemade toothpaste recipe!

Not only are commercial toothpastes loaded with sugars and chemicals, if you are concerned about waste, buying and throwing away plastic toothpaste tubes (even if you buy natural toothpastes) contributes to the mountains of waste clogging our landfills. However, you can make your own homemade toothpaste out of safe and natural ingredients, and reduce waste while saving money too!

This basic natural homemade toothpaste recipe contains just a few ingredients like baking soda for whitening and freshening, xylitol – a sugar alcohol which actually kills bacteria and prevents tooth decay, and peppermint oil for a fresh, clean flavor. Coconut oil may also have some oral health benefits, and it helps to bring your toothpaste together and gives it a nice, creamy texture.

Here’s how to make it (see recipe below the video):

Ingredients:
1/2 cup baking soda (I use Bob’s Red Mill)
1/4 cup extra virgin coconut oil
5 Tbs. xylitol
1 tsp. peppermint extract (or to taste)

Directions:
Combine ingredients and store in a jar or container until ready to use!
