This nifty DIY solar water filter is super simple to make, and may come in handy for off-grid survival!

This isn’t so much a homesteading trick, but it may come in handy in an off-grid survival situation! This simple design for a DIY solar water filter is super easy to make – all you need is two plastic soda bottles, some glue, a piece of PVC pipe, and a drill with a wing bit (or some other device to cut the soda bottle caps).

To use, simply fill the bottom bottle with water, screw on the cap with the pipe and other bottle on top, and set in the sun. As the water evaporates, it will condense into the top bottle, leaving the impurities behind. (However, keep in mind that this design does not totally guarantee safe drinking water, so this is best used only in survival situations!)
