Learn how to make your own homemade brown sugar in less than 1 minute, and you’ll never run out again!
Living off-the-grid has some challenges – not the least of which is the lack of easy access to modern conveniences such as grocery stores during bad weather. If you live “out in the boondocks” as we used to say, winter weather can sometimes leave you stranded for several days or longer after a bad storm. Most homesteaders aren’t too bothered by these occurrences, as self-sufficiency is a way of life for most of us! However, it can be inconvenient at times if you run out of a staple food item during a patch of bad weather.
This is why it is important to be prepared by learning how to make your own substitutes whenever possible. For example, this simple homemade brown sugar recipe can be made using two simple ingredients that you probably have in your pantry most of the time. In fact, it’s so easy that you just may never buy brown sugar again!

A Few Notes:
- For a richer flavor and darker color, add a drizzle of blackstrap molasses as well.
- If you don’t have a food processor or blender (or electricity) you can also make this by hand in a bowl using a wooden spoon (this is how my mom taught my sisters and me when we were kids). Just use a wooden spoon to mix and cream the molasses into the sugar. It will take longer but will yield the same result.
- Store your homemade brown sugar in an air-tight container. If it gets hard, soften it up by putting a slice of bread in the container for a day or two.
