As more people become concerned about the environment, more homebuyers and homeowners are implementing eco-friendly interior design principles. Here are some sustainability trends to watch…

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. Surveys show that using products made from sustainable materials is important to 42% of consumers in the US and the UK. Additionally, more than two-thirds of worldwide customers say they will buy or boycott a brand based solely on its stance on a social or political issue. And 75% of millennials are willing to take a pay sacrifice to work for an environmentally friendly organization. More people are also implementing biophilic design principles in their homes. With this in mind, we are taking look at sustainability trends in interior & home design.

We hope that in the not-too-distant future, sustainability is no longer viewed as a “trend” and will simply become integrated into all aspects of our lives, including the interior design decisions we make.

According to Esra Kumbasar, Design Director of Accouter Group of Companies, “We are far more conscious of the way in which the world’s natural resources are diminishing. Moving into 2022, we will become more entrenched in nurturing our moral senses,” resulting in “a greater focus on sustainability in terms of the materials we use and the brands we shop from”.

Kumbasar further predicts that similar to the fashion industry, the rental furniture revolution will accelerate: “As the demand for sustainability gains momentum, individuals will seek flexible interior solutions, without having to compromise on design or quality. Rather than disposing of old items and purchasing new pieces, renting offers the perfect solution”.

Why Is Sustainability Important in Interior Design?

Interior design can be heavily influenced by sustainability. New construction provides an opportunity for interior designers to create eco-friendly designs from the ground up, utilizing energy-efficient designs and recycled building materials. Newer energy technologies and thermal modeling can be used to make a building more comfortable by increasing energy efficiency, while passive heating, cooling, and ventilation design can improve indoor air quality. Interior designers can lessen the need for electrical lighting by considering the quantity of natural light available to internal places in the home. This type of research is essential for designing a green structure.

What Are the Current Trends in Interior Design?

When it comes to fashion, a trend refers to the styling, colors, fabrics, and shapes that are popular in a certain season and may have a long-term impact on the market. Interior design trends are comparable to fashion trends in that they are both influenced by culture and current events. Trying to predict where the latest trends will go and which styles, materials, and colors will be most appealing to consumers in the future is a difficult task for designers and architects that necessitates much research and observation.
