Passive housing can help you save money on energy bills and reduce your home’s carbon footprint…

While there are many different things that homeowners can do to improve your home’s energy efficiency, some people opt for a high level of efficiency through building a passive home. Passive housing (sometimes called passive solar or passive heating) is a home that is built to utilize the natural energy of the sun and other eco-friendly energy sources to keep the home at a comfortable temperature.

Passive houses are often maintained at a constant temperature through the use of solar heating mechanisms and other eco-friendly technologies to minimize hot and cold spots throughout the house, and keep the home’s inhabitants comfortable at all times, while minimizing electricity use. There are different definitions of passive housing throughout the world, but the concept is especially popular in Germany, where a house must meet certain standards to qualify as a passive house.

Passive houses generally have extremely efficient ventilation and insulation, energy-efficient windows, and passive solar features designed to collect and utilize the energy from the sun to warm the home. The benefits of passive housing include reduce reliance on fossil fuels, improved indoor air quality, and, of course, significant savings on energy bills.
